Ikoria quick draft2/21/2023 ![]() (Or until you've added all 18 options to your collection!) This includes both Ikoria Draft and Sealed events, and you will receive one each time you enter until the deadline. Until May 21, players who enter an Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths Limited event will also receive a Godzilla Monster Series card style in addition to normal event rewards. Yes, that is Godzilla, and yes-you'll be able to get those alternate-art card styles in MTG Arena. Even if you have been keeping up with it, it's probably worth a second look. ![]() If you haven't been keeping up with all the card previews, we recommend you take this moment to go check out the full card image gallery. Play safe, play at home, play with friends, play now. In this month's game update, we'll share our plan to provide more ways to play, compete, and connect in Magic: The Gathering Arena. It's almost time to step into the lair of behemoths, and now is definitely the moment to talk more about our vision. UG and BG are open to splash even double pipped cards like ultimatums with enough farfinders/fertilids, lore drakkis makes cheaper spells very valuable, back for more makes the cycling sandworm a nice card, porcuparrot mutating onto bootnipper, etc.Big monsters. BW humans I'd consider if it was open (getting passed sanctuary lockdowns + hopefully a general enforcer), BR and UG are also fine, though haven't felt quite as strong as the top 3.Īside from general pick orders, ikoria has been fun in that there's a lot of uncommons that can make you prioritize commons. All 3 have strong options at both common and uncommon, and can make competitive decks. In a vacuum, there's three archetypes I'd try to lean into more than others: UR spells/WR cycling, and BG mutate. R/spikes has some general draft guides as well that are worth checking. I think Ben stark has the clearest explanations and also posts vids to youtube, but others like deathsie and justlolaman seem to be doing well (I find deathsie's picks a bit confusing, as he stays open longer than I'd be comfortable with if I were new to drafting, and Lolaman often doesn't explain his thoughts that much but they're good players, and likely doing something right). I'd also look at twitch vods of some of the top drafters. For instance, I did a quick draft and saw flourishing fox as low rated from the untapped.gg plugin, when it's one of the top 3 cards you want in a cycling deck.įor that, I would check out r/lrcast/ for a subreddit focused around limited (limited resources' podcast reddit). I think this is usually a lot better now post set release than when a lot of the pick order stuff comes (which is usually a guess based on the released cards but before drafting). The biggest thing in general is just getting other, more experienced people's view on a thing. Some of my easiest 7-x runs have been from decks packing enough removal to ensure late game, especially when cards like Lore Drakkis, Boneyard Lurker, and Rooting Moloch can allow you to multiply your removal even further. ![]() ![]() Everyone is already aware of Boros cycling as a draft archetype, but there's also the WB go-wide list that utilizes a lot of low-curve commons and uncommons to punish slower mutate decks.įinally, there are very few uncommon/common creatures that hold a higher draft priority than removal. This is largely due to all of the alternate casting costs, as well as the cycle mechanic.īoth the cycling and the mutate mechanics lead towards snowbally game states (huge creature that can't die through combat, or gains massive advantage through mutate effects, or cycling decks beating you up with cheap creatures and massive non-combat damage), so it's hugely important that you aren't the player forced to "take a turn off" because you only have a few cards that interact at 1 or 2 cmc. To add to this - Ikoria is a format that can really reward decks that pay attention to their mana curve. ![]()
